Abandoned Railway Coach Harks Back to Argentina’s Nationalised Railways

In his image titled Abandonado, photographer Emilio Küffer captured the sad form of an abandoned railway coach, coupled to other forsaken rollingstock. His composition draws the viewer into the picture, along the body of the decaying coach and down the tracks toward the setting (or, perhaps, rising) sun. The scene was captured near the port city of San Antonio Oeste in Argentina’s Río Negro Province, a spectacular landscape on the northern edge of Patagonia.

The abandoned railway coach is a corroding shadow of its former glory. Its windows have been smashed and its bogies have seized due to rust. On its side is the name Ferrocarriles Argentinos (or FA), the state owned company that managed the Argentine rail network for over 40 years. FA was founded in 1949 and finally closed down due to the privatization of the country’s railway system in 1993. It’s possible that the abandoned stock pictured here was left to rust from that point onward.
