Some five miles outside Bridgend, near the tiny Welsh village of Cefn Cribwr, sits this abandoned limestone quarry. Not so long ago, this was a centre of local industry. Huge earth movers rumbled across the bleached, alien landscape. Excavators jostled for space with transporting equipment. It was a place of noise and bustle and graft.
Then, one day, the whole place was quietly abandoned. Machines were left to rust. Towers crumbled under leaden skies. Today, Cefn Cribwr’s abandoned limestone quarry is suffused with a spectacular eeriness; a feeling that the world has ended and these rusting hulks are all that is left.
