Fire escapes are designed to serve a purpose and one purpose only, but that doesn’t mean they must be ugly. New York real estate broker and photographer Tim Simmons demonstrated this to great effect in his series showcasing the ornate fire escapes of Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen, The one pictured above serves a narrow building behind Thistle Street in central Edinburgh and demonstrates a neat solution to public safety in a confined space. Cheered by the odd plant, the only compromise would appear to be access to the garage.
