In recent weeks we’ve explored two ghost towns and abandoned settlements on the Faroe Islands – the “living ghost town” of Múli and the deserted whaling station of Við Áir. Skarvanes is a similar village, this time on the island of Sandoy.

When its last permanent resident died in 2000, Skarvanes was finally abandoned, at least during the winter months. The traditional houses, some boasting turf roofs, were closed up and residents moved to more populated areas of the archipelago.

But some continue to return during the summer, and Skarvanes once again comes to life for the holiday season. Despite its lack of year-round inhabitants, a family of four is said to reside in a nearby valley.
