Harrier XZ988 Falklands Crashed Harrier GR3, Goose Green, Falklands(Image: Douglas Fernandez, reproduced with permission)

Lying on the isolated Lafonia peninsula of East Falkland, this mangled tail section is all that remains of a No. 1 Squadron Harrier GR3.  The jet – serial number XZ988 – was shot down by Argentine forces on May 27, 1982 during an attack on Goose Green.  The pilot, Squadron Leader Bob Iveson, ejected safely and spent three days on the ground before being picked up by British troops.  This Harrier was one of several transported to the Falkland Islands aboard the ill-fated container vessel Atlantic Conveyor.  Like the ship, XZ988 was destined to remain there, an enduring reminder of the 74-day conflict that claimed over 900 lives.
