This retired train from 1960s London may not be travelling anymore, but it’s still serving London commuters every day! Inside the disused carriage is one of London’s most unique eateries, The Deptford Project cafe. Currently sitting in the old railway yard of Deptford Station, The Depford Project aims to bring some life and activity back into the formerly abandoned space.

Fully decked out in bespoke decorations and brightly-painted furniture, The Deptford Project cafe has served many visitors who have flocked to the area for music and film events throughout the past year. The interior artwork features images inspired by local history, including pictures reflecting Deptford’s ship building industry and livestock transportation. Food is locally sourced, and the cafe has been a big hit among locals and visitors.

The use of space in the old carriage has maximized customer seating and offers plenty of natural light. A garden shed outside the carriage houses modern toilet facilities (as well as a lot of Elvis memorabilia!).

While creative uses of abandoned space are popping up the world over, it’s nice to see an abandoned train brought back to life for the modern age.
