In addition to its outstanding natural beauty, Aberlady Bay on the east coast of Scotland is home to the rusting remains of two midget submarines that played a crucial role during World War Two. These XT class vessels were used to train the men who would undertake one of the most risky submarine missions of the war, which saw the mighty German battleship Tirpitz crippled. Their task completed, the midget subs, built by Vickers-Armstrong Limited during 1943-44, were moored in Aberlady Bay in 1946 and used for military target practice for many years. Their corroding superstructures remain accessible at low tide. (Full feature here.)
