I've been inside on an occasion that the gate at the ramp was open. There were workmen present and I kindly asked them if I could have a peek. They did not mind. Might not be official though. But it was well worth it. A true time-capsule.

I've not been in the tunnels personally, but I'm a bit of a history geek and subterranean London is a maze of tunnels, passages etc. I found this while I was researching that stuff. At the moment, the tunnels are open for an art exhibition, so it would be well worth popping down and seeing it now as there's no way (that I know of) of getting past the heavy gates. Furthermore, doing so would be illegal, as it would be breaking and entering, and I certainly do not encourage anyone to do that.

How do you know about the entrances, have you gone into the tunells? And would this be filed under "legal" or "illicit" urban exploration?

That's a very good point! By the sounds of it there are several ways in, the main one being the gate (pictured) where the tram lines disappear into the tunnel beneath The Strand. This is the one that's currently open for the art exhibition, so definitely the one to go for! The former southern portal entrance is now used by cars and blocked off from the old subway and the entrance under the bridge is now a bar, so no way in there. It seems like there's another tunnel connecting to the old Aldwych tube station, but no idea whether or not it's accessible? My guess is it's pretty well sealed off...
